At Les 2 Alpes, safety on the ski area goes far beyond responding to accidents. It is built on proactive, dynamic prevention actions, designed for guests and their different ways of enjoying the mountains.
This approach has taken shape through a new initiative, rolled out from the 2024–2025 winter season, called “Ski Safe.”
Launched by SATA Group AEON, operator of the ski areas of Les 2 Alpes, Alpe d’Huez, La Grave and Alpe du Grand Serre, Ski Safe is a global and evolving initiative. Its aim is to continuously improve safety on the slopes, traffic flow and the overall experience for skiers and snowboarders, whatever their level or discipline.
More than a programme, Ski Safe is a collective commitment. It brings together a dedicated team of ski patrollers, as well as all resort stakeholders (ski schools, accommodation providers, equipment rental shops, etc.).
The objective is clear: to ensure every skier has the right information, at the right time, so they can enjoy the Les 2 Alpes ski area with complete peace of mind.
With changing skiing practices, improved equipment and increasing visitor numbers, accident prevention has become a major challenge. The Ski Safe approach is based on several complementary actions:
Clear, easy-to-read information across the ski area, with reinforced signage and improved skier flow management,
Visitor awareness through prevention campaigns on the slopes and in the resort,
An active presence of ski patrollers, who carry out preventive patrols, observe skier behaviour and prioritise dialogue, advice and education on the slopes.
This human-centred approach helps anticipate risky situations, limit collisions and promote collective safety, without reducing the enjoyment of skiing.
“Our role isn’t to scold or penalise, but to support,” explains Nicolas Mathieu, Head of the Ski Safe team at Les 2 Alpes. “If someone enjoys speed, is in control but skiing in the wrong area, we guide them to the right slope where they can have fun without putting themselves or others at risk.”
Ski patrollers trained and dedicated to the Ski Safe initiative play a central role in safety across the ski area. Beyond piste marking and accident response, their missions now fully include:
Observing skier traffic on the slopes,
Supporting skiers in difficulty,
Advising skiers on choosing slopes suited to their ability.
They are also on the front line when it comes to reminding visitors of the importance of:
Responsible skier behaviour,
Appropriate equipment,
Increased vigilance, particularly during peak periods or changing weather conditions.
For those wishing to explore off-piste skiing at Les 2 Alpes, the Ski Safe team also
plays a key role in prevention and education, informing riders about the risks involved and individual responsibility when leaving marked areas.
The team strongly emphasises that off-piste skiing involves inherent risks and requires thorough preparation.
They highlight the importance of carrying appropriate safety equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe, airbag backpack), checking weather conditions and avalanche risk, and, for less experienced skiers, being accompanied by qualified mountain professionals.
At Les 2 Alpes, a DVA Park is dedicated to avalanche victim search training and learning essential safety reflexes using detection equipment. It is freely accessible and located at the top of the Bellecombe chairlift.
